What changes when the new Congress is sworn in

The outgoing Republican Congress keeps control until then. These are the dates that matter between now and then.

  • Committee gavels change hands

Democrats chair every House and Senate committee, which brings subpoenas, hearings and requests to the GAO and inspectors general.

  • The Senate controls confirmations

With 51 or more seats, Democrats decide which nominees get hearings and votes. The Vice President's tie-breaking vote no longer decides control.

  • Bills still face a veto

Overriding a veto takes two-thirds of each chamber, 290 House and 67 Senate votes with everyone present. Most bills that pass will be vetoed.

    U.S. Constitution, Art. I, Sec. 7
  • The filibuster still applies

54 to 56 seats is short of the 60 needed to end debate on most bills in the Senate.

Senate races that changed or are still open

Seven Republican-held seats flipped and no Democratic seats were lost. Two Republican-held seats are still being counted.

How this ledger works

Every row links the page it came from and the time that page showed. When sources disagree, the row says so instead of picking one. Calls are replaced by certified results as states certify them.

Corrections are logged here with the date and what changed. No corrections yet.
